(Pre)serve the world, it's in our nature

Dr. Vithal Venkatesh Kamat is a distinguished hospitality leader, environmentalist, entrepreneur, author, antiquarian, educationalist, ornithologist, globetrotter, and a black belt in karate. A second-generation restaurateur, he transformed a humble family-owned vegetarian restaurant into a globally recognised hospitality enterprise, earning a reputation as one of India's most visionary hoteliers.

Under his leadership, The Orchid became Asia's first certified eco-friendly five-star hotel and one of the world's most awarded green hotels. His commitment to sustainable hospitality has also shaped landmark properties including Fort JadhavGADH – Pune's first museum hotel, Mahodadhi Palace in Puri, VITS Hotels, Lotus Resorts, and the renowned chain of Vithal Kamat restaurants.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the hospitality industry, Dr. Kamat became the first hotelier to be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Science (Honoris Causa) by Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil University in 2012.

imgEnvironmental Stewardship in Action

Driving community-led conservation and sustainable living initiatives.

Dr. Kamat's commitment to environmental conservation extends beyond hospitality and afforestation. He has actively supported more than 1,200 Advance Locality Management (ALM) groups working towards cleaner and more hygienic neighbourhoods across India. Guided by his belief that "We can't command nature except by obeying her," he has championed sustainable practices through the principles of the three R's – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. His awareness initiatives, including Rainwater Harvesting and Wealth from Waste exhibitions, have benefited over 300,000 students and numerous residential communities, encouraging responsible environmental practices at the grassroots level.

A passionate conservationist and nature enthusiast, Dr. Kamat has led several unique wildlife and ecological preservation initiatives. These include the creation of Mumbai's renowned "Raghu-Chivu Galli" (Parrot & Sparrow Street), conservation efforts for turtle eggs along the Konkan and Odisha coastlines, and the protection of deer habitats near Fort JadhavGADH in Pune. He has also distributed thousands of specially designed sparrow feeders to guests and employees, helping revive urban bird populations. Demonstrating his commitment to circular sustainability, he annually oversees the conversion of more than 200 tonnes of Nirmalya (flower offerings) collected after Mumbai's Ganesh festival into organic manure, turning waste into a valuable environmental resource.

"Environment is my passion, Heritage is my creed, Hospitality is my life."
